Ceramic Ongoing and Year-Round Classes and Events


The Bascom's Dave Drake Studio Barn offers a variety of opportunities for artists of all levels to enjoy and explore.  Whether you are interested in taking a private class, workshop, or creating independently, The Bascom's Ceramic Department has an option for you.

Levels are based on the following criteria:

Beginner level (I): No art experience or one year or less.
Intermediate level (II): 2-5 years art experience.
Advanced Level (III): 5 years art experience through professional artist.

Clay Art By Appointment with The Bascom Ceramic Resident Artist

Pick a time slot, wear some old clothes and we will provide a knowledgeable instructor who will guide you through the process of either hand building or the potter’s wheel. Pieces will be ready 3 weeks after date of appointment.

An independent study program designed to give students extra time to practice ideas. Students must have taken at least one cycle of the Resident Artist Series or completed 2 Art by Appointments before registering for Open Studio.

Resident Artist Series with Frank Vickery

The Resident Artist Series in Clay is a program designed for students of all levels. Topics change monthly involving both wheel throwing and hand building techniques. The Resident Artist Series is provided in part by funding from the Coastal Community Foundation.

Wine Down

Wine Down is a great way to have fun with the creative process and relax with friends after a long day at the office.  Projects can be made using the Potter’s Wheel or hand built using the slab machine.  Examples of projects include bowls, mugs, serving trays with a sauce dish, bird houses, etc.

Playing in Clay on Saturday

This class is designed for the weekend pottery enthusiasts. The group can decide between hand building or wheel throwing. 

You Too Can Raku

You select the vase, paint on the glaze, then we fire it for you. Pieces are ready in an hour and a half to take home. Maximum number of pieces to be fired per session is 4.

8th Annual Dave Drake Studio Barn Sales

The 8th annual pottery sales will be held in the historic Dave Drake Studio Barn, formerly known as Crane’s riding stable. Enjoy wonderful and beautiful handmade pottery with an added bonus of demonstrations including wheel throwing, sculpture, hand building, carving, and sqraffito.

9th Annual Three Potter's Symposium

The Bascom's Dave Drake Studio Barn's Three Potter's Symposium is a favorite amongst ceramic enthusiast.  Visit the barn to watch this year's artists Amy Sanders, Jen Mecca, and Kristin Shoonover converse as they demonstrate within their unique aesthetics.
